The Belgian government has asked the operator of the Tiange 2 nuclear power plant to extend the operation of the station until the end of the winter peak in electricity consumption. This was announced by Prime Minister Alexander de Croo.

„The government has asked the operator to extend the operation of Tiange 2 until the winter peak passes,” he said during a press conference on the winter plan for energy supply.

It is noted that the Tiange nuclear power plant accounts for about a quarter of all electricity generation in Belgium. „Tiange 2” and „3” are mainly owned by Electrabel, a member of the Engie group (89.8%).

As reported in Engie, the extension of the Tiange 2 operation is impossible due to technical reasons and restrictions in the field of nuclear safety. Negotiations are underway to prolong Tiange 3 until 2035.
